Fruits & Vegetables, Dairy, Poultry & Fisheries - Leveraging the Diverse India opportunity
India offers the largest diversified production base which is the key advantage of the Indian food processing sector.
more
- India is the 2nd largest producer of fruits and vegetables and produces approximately 13.6% of fruits and 14% of vegetables produced in the world.
- On the dairy front India ranks first in milk production, accounting for 18.5 % of world production. Indian dairy sector is amongst the largest and fastest growing markets in the world and is expected to grow by 13-15% CAGR in the coming years.
- Indian Poultry Industry is one of the fastest growing segments of the agricultural sector today with annual growth rates of 5.57 percent and 11.44 percent in egg and broiler production, respectively.
These production advantages put forth massive opportunities for industries engaged in food processing, equipment manufacturers, service providers like aggregators, financial institutions, as well as small and large entrepreneurs. Advantages in segments such as dairy, meat & poultry also put forth huge opportunity for automation, integration etc.
To build on the India opportunity an exclusive session on sub-sectoral opportunities will be organized to highlight specific opportunities for processors, sourcing teams, technology and service providers etc as well as policy and fiscal incentives (center as well as state) for the various sub segments viz Fruits & Vegetables, Dairy, Cereals, Poultry and Sea Food.

“IDEAL DESTINATION FOR FOOD PROCESSING” - STATE SESSION ON KERALA
‘Food Processing Sector’ has been identified a sunrise sector of the country, which has a huge potential for contributing to the growth of the agriculture and allied sectors like horticulture, animal husbandry, fisheries etc. Due to the high potential for growth, the Govt. of Kerala has earmarked ‘Food Processing’ as a Priority Sector for the State.
Kerala has always been in the forefront with respect to food processing, being a major exporter of food products. Kerala’s association with food exports to various foreign countries dates back to 16th century. Major products that were exported from Kerala were cashew, seafood, spices, tea, coffee etc which constituted the traditional industrial sector of Kerala. These sectors have over the years evolved into modern food processing sectors and paved the way for the establishment of a robust industrial sector in the State.
more
Apart from the above mentioned traditional products, a new segment of products have emerged in recent times. Exports of ethnic cuisine of Kerala (Ready-to-eat) using the local produce to cater mostly to non-resident Keralites in various foreign countries have evolved into an important export sector. There are numerous units in Kerala with dedicated operations to this sector.
In addition, the State has an excellent industrial infrastructure dedicated exclusively for the food processing sector. Kerala is the first to set up a Food Park. The KINFRA Food Processing Park at Kakkancherry in Malappuram District of Kerala has the distinction of being the first Food Park of the country. This was followed by Food Parks at Mazhavannor in Ernakulam District, Adoor in Pathanamthitta District and a specialized park for pre-processing activity of the seafood sector at Aroor in Alappuzha District. KINFRA also has set up the first exclusive Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for agro processing at Kakkancherry.
Besides being well-known as “God’s Own Country” from the tourism perspective, the State has earned credit for several aspects such as attainment of highest literacy rate in the country, acknowledgment of its highly educated and skilled manpower, achieving highest ‘physical quality of life index’, its distinct greenery symbolizing the extreme fertility of its soil and its rich agricultural base, etc all of which together transform the State into an ideal destination for investments, particularly for food processing sector.
Two major food processing infrastructure projects are on the anvil in Kerala namely the KINFRA Mega Food Parked Palakkad and KSIDC Mega Food Park at Alappuzha. The State is keen to attract investments in these new projects of the State
The KINFRA Mega Food Park at Palakkad, being set up near to the industrial hub of Palakkad, will cater to the infrastructural needs of the food processing sector covering a wide range of agricultural produces such as coconuts, fruits and vegetables, spices, paddy, etc. The KINFRA Mega Food Park would establish backward linkage with numerous farmers of the surrounding region covering six districts of the State.
The KSIDC Mega Food Park at Alappuzha will cater exclusively to marine processing, considering the advantageous position of Kerala in the marine products segment. The Kochi-Alappuzha-Kollam belt is an important centre of seafood processing and export business activity in India and KSIDC Mega Food Park is expected to give a major boost to the sector.
The state session will highlight the immense opportunities that this state holds for you….Welcome to Kerala, a small world of Big Opportunities.

Present Status of Food Processing Industries and Investment Opportunities in Uttarakhand
Agriculture is an important sector of Uttarakhand’s economy. Because of its location and diverse climate, the state has certain unique advantages for development of horticulture, agro processing industries, organic farming, off season vegetable cultivation and cultivation of medicinal and aromatic plants which can be gainfully exploited.
In hilly areas, fruits such as apple, pear, peach, plum, khumani and walnut are produced while mango, litchi, malta, orange, lemon, Indian Gooseberry, guava, and pomegranate are mostly grown in Tarai and valley areas. Major vegetables grown in the state are potato, cauliflower, tomato, onion, brinjal, pea, cabbage and okra. The state has a unique advantage of producing off-season vegetables in hilly areas, which fetches good price in the market. Major spices produced are ginger, garlic, turmeric and chilly.
more

Tamil Nadu
- The food processing industries sector in Tamil Nadu is a sunrise sector that has gained prominence in recent years. Availability of raw materials, changing lifestyles and relaxation in policies has given a considerable push to the industry’s growth. This sector is among the few that serves as a vital link between the agriculture and industrial segments of the economy.
- The initiatives and interventions taken up by the Government such as Integrated Mega Food Park, Supply Chain Management, Terminal Market have been expected to facilitate the growth of agriculture sector and provide potential business opportunities. Thus the day has come that we ought to work together with “win win” strategy giving Business Outlook to the traditional farming.
- Tamil Nadu has a vibrant Agro-based food industry because of ideal climatic conditions for growth of fruits and vegetables. In Tamil Nadu, food processing in the form drying, vegetable oil, grain processing, sugar breweries are in existence for a quite long period. Presently, fruit processing, dairy product processing, cashew processing and ready to eat foods are increasing in Tamil Nadu
- Tamil Nadu produces around120 lakh metric tonnes of food grains, 62 lakh MT of fruits and 78 lakh MT of vegetables. 10-20% of food grain production is lost every year both at pre and post harvest stages. Similarly 30-35% fruits and vegetables produces are also wasted at various stages from picking to final consumption. This indicates the scope that exists for adoption of post harvest modern techniques ensuring preservation and minimizing wastages of agricultural produce. This also indicates the immense potential and scope that exists for setting up of food processing industries so that available raw materials may be put into the most judicious use.

Opportunity in Positive Nutrition – Nutraceuticals and Fortified products
Due to an evolving lifestyle, a growing awareness of quality, and the increasing incidence of food-heart-related diseases, consumers worldwide are showing an interest in a preventive lifestyle rather than a curative approach. In a huge and diverse country like India, this trend is relevant in two radically different ways; more
- A large part of rural India suffers from malnutrition and seeks foods that supplements basic minerals and nutrients
- People in urban India suffer from lifestyle-related disorders and seek solace in low fat, low sugar, and low cholesterol products.
Given the above background, the Indian Health food sector though, at a nascent stage, is strongly positioned for growth and offers huge potential for both Nutraceuticals and Fortified food market.
Nutraceuticals, given their nutritional value, have gone from relatively unknown research breakthroughs, to becoming a regular part of diet of the ever increasingly health conscious consumer. The Nutraceuticals market of India was estimated to be around USD 2.4bn in 2015 and was projected to grow at a CAGR of 17% . Dietary supplements specifically herbal & dietic supplements are expected to be the greatest opportunity areas. India is well positioned to become one of the Nutraceuticals hubs given its ideal location for manufacturing Nutraceuticals products due to the immense wealth of biodiversity as well as availability of medicinal & herbal plants and good quality produce of fruits and vegetables.
Fortification is another aspect on healthy nutrition offering the key advantage of making frequently eaten foods more nutritious without relying on consumers to change their habits. Given the need to ensure availability of nutritious food to the large population scope for growth of fortification industry is also huge.
The session will discuss the opportunity in the health food segment. Focus will also be on discussing industry issues viz availability of processable varieties, organized farming etc and further expectations. On fortification the discussion will be on showcasing initiatives taken in terms of staples, and the opportunities available.

Opportunities in Infrastructure Technology & Equipment
The growth in the Indian food processing industry coupled with the recent issues of food quality, safety and hygiene are pushing the demand for more sophisticated machinery and equipment.
In 2013, India imported food processing and packaging machinery worth EUR53 million . According to German Engineering Federation, in 2013, out of the total import volume of food processing and packaging machinery from Germany to India (estimated to be EUR132.4 million), the highest share of machinery import was packaging machinery, with a total volume of EUR79.1 million.
more
Given the dominance of small and medium, players in the food processing segment cost of the machinery also becomes a critical factor. Given that a large number of specialised equipment is being imported the cost becomes high so there is scope for establishing manufacturing base for the machinery and equipment within the country.
Further to increase the technology uptake the Government is providing specific incentives to the sector in terms of duty reductions, duty exemptions etc.
The session will discuss the technology and equipment appetite of the Indian food processing industry in detail, favourable incentives available to the importers as well as manufacturers and the scope for future growth.
